When roots was first shown on network television in 1977 [see http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Roots_(TV_miniseries)], I was a college student at the University of Wisconsin in Superior. I must admit that I was too busy with school work to actually see every episode.
Recently we rented the Roots video and watched it in its entirety with the kids. We have been deeply affected by it.
Strange how quickly we forget. It's very important to always keep this part of American history in focus. Not to blame anyone, but to remind us all (just as the Jewish community does with the holocaust) that many have suffered to get us where we are today.
That is why we must be mindful of what we do. Whatever it is, it must be done with dignity and integrity. If those who suffered to afford us what we have today should have a glimpse of our lives today, they must know that it was well worth their pain and suffering.
There are people who thrive on "demanding their rights". It is not unjustified to seek to rectify wrongs where they exist. But also remember Words from a Great Book which says, "And whatever you do, whether in word or deed, do it all in the name of the Lord Jesus, giving thanks to God the Father through him". [Colossians 3:17 (NIV)]
We are not where we need to be. But we've come a long way.
